Arrival and car parking facilities.
There is ample free parking around the museum and 2 disabled
parking bays at the front of the museum. The Museum is
reached via a gently sloping block paved ramp. There is a small
car park to the side of the museum, this is also block paved.
The museum is reached via a pathway with a small step up from
the car park and three steps with handrail; this leads to the
main entrance. Please be aware that the area in front of the
museum is due to be pedestrianized during 2008 which will
involve some disruption to access.
The main entrance has two sets of double doors. The left-hand
set as you approach the museum is accessible using push button
Immediately inside the entrance is the Foyer where the
tourist information leaflets are displayed. To the right is the
café, straight on leads to the shop and reception desk.
Inside the museum there is a lift and stair to the first floor.
The lift has Braille indicators. All floors have level access with
a gentle ramp between the 20th Century Woman and Linthorpe
galleries. Visually impaired visitors may like to know that the
ground floor has parquet flooring in several galleries with floor
set grills for the under floor heating system.
Static floor plans are situated in the Foyer and next to the lift
on the ground and first floors. A5 size floor plans are available
at reception to help guide your visit. Large print versions of
the floor plan are available by prior request.
Ground floor. Seating with armrests can be found in the Odeon
Cinema, Newport Hotel, and Nelson bird Gallery. Low level
comfy seating and a bench seat can be found in the circulation
First Floor. Seating with armrests can be found in the H2O and
20th Century woman galleries. Bench seating can be found in the
Open Gallery. Moveable stools are available in the H2O gallery.
Borrowing a Wheelchair
A wheelchair is available for visitor use. It is situated near the
shop area. Please as at the reception desk.
We do not have a payphone in the museum however; the shop
phone can be used on request in an emergency or to book taxis
for disabled people.
We welcome assistance dogs. Staff can provide a bowl of
water, please enquire at the reception desk.
Induction loops are fitted at the reception desk and most of
the computer interactives.
Most computer interactives have subtitles, however the Odeon
Cinema and Earth in space Gallery films do not.
Large text is used where possible on the display panels. Large
text copies of labels and information are available for some
exhibitions by prior request.
Guided Tours for Groups
These can be booked with the Assistant Curator or the
Education Team in advance. They last between 45 minutes to an
hour. A charge may be incurred please call the museum on
01642 813781 for further details.
The Fire Alarm is a loud klaxon or bell. The lifts cannot be used
in case of fire. Fire wardens trained in the use of Evac Chairs
are available to assist visitor with restricted mobility
downstairs. Please make your needs know to a member of staff
or Fire Warden.
Toilets and Baby changing
There are male, female and an accessible toilet on the ground
floor. Baby changing facilities can be found in the accessible
Eating at Nana Tomís
Nana Tomís is situated just inside the Foyer on the right. They
serve both hot and cold drinks, a range of hot and cold
sandwiches, jacket potatoes and pastries throughout the day.
There are both round and square tables available. You order
food at the counter and it is served to your table. If you
require to be waited on at the table please advise a member of
the café staff.
A great range of unusual gifts, souvenirs, crafts, collectables,
books and pocket money items are available. For display
purposes items are on shelving which may be too high to access
for some visitors; staff will be only too happy to assist visitors
to examine items on display. Please ask at reception.
Conference and Meeting Rooms.
