Information for teachers planning a visit.
EDUCATION VISITS
Although some externally-funded activities can be free, we make a small charge (per child) for staff-led sessions with project work. Please contact the Education Officer(s) to discuss your particular project needs.

SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS -
Most workshops have a strong hands-on element and are easily adapted for pupils with special educational needs. Please contact one of our Education Officers to discuss your group's requirements.

- The Dorman Museum is operated by Middlesbrough Council. It is governed by all the normal local authority regulations and insurances.

PRACTICAL ADVICE
- Risk Assessments - in accordance with DfES guideline it is the responsibility of the visiting teacher(s) to undertake a risk assessment but see help sheet below.
- To gain the most from their visit children should be closely supervised. We suggest a ratio of 1 adult per 10 children.
- We suggest that you bring maximum of 90 children, it will be useful to split into smaller groups of 30 and stagger entry by around 10 minutes, each group can then explore.
- Parking is permitted on the street to the front and side of the museum.
- A visit can take from 2 hours o a full day if using all of the displays.
- To prevent bottlenecks in the reception area please arrange for small groups to visit the shop at separate times during your visit.
- Please book visits at least two weeks in advance.

ACCESSIBILITY
The museum has wheelchair and pram access to all floors. Our lift can accommodate up to three wheelchairs and three carers or teachers at any one time.
There are 2 disabled parking bays immediately in front of the museum and the museum can be accessed via a ramp to the automated front door.
A wheelchair is available for use by visitors, prior notice is preferred.

A free teacher's pack based upon the museum's popular 'Town in Time' galleries is available on request.

There is a charge of £10 per half term. Preference is given to schools visiting the museum. Schools must pick up and return. Booking required.
OTHER FACILITIES
A shop is housed in the reception area, which sells a range of stock, from “pocket money items” to quality gifts.
The education suite is available to booked groups. It contains full toilet facilities, sinks and can be used for eating packed lunches.
Male, female and disabled public toilets are located on the ground floor and there are clearly marked fire escapes to the front & rear of the building

1. Town in Time
A hands-on, interactive history of Middlesbrough from prehistory through to the 21st century.
2. Nelson Room
A time capsule showing the Museum as it was, and demonstrating some of our original collection of birds, eggs and nests.
3. Earth in Space
An exploration of astronomical events, which have influenced the formation of the Earth and the extinction and evolution of life. The journey begins with the “Big Bang”.
4. Linthorpe Art Pottery
A display of our premier collection of Victorian Linthorpe Pottery and it's renowned designer - Christopher Dresser.
5. 20th Century Woman
A study of the changes in the role of women in Middlesbrough during the last century.
6. Four Corners
Find out about where our collections came from and who the collectors were. Cultural objects are displayed from the Roman and Egyptian Empires as well as Africa, Asia and the Americas.

A hands-on gallery exploring the theme of water.
8. Temporary Exhibition Gallery - ground floor.
Our major changing exhibition space.
