Temporary Exhibition Gallery - ground floor

Into Africa

17 February - 10 June 2007

Major unique exhibition curated by Harry Lyons - well known Christopher Dresser expert examining the textile designs of Dresser for the African market in the late 19th century. The exhibition sets the amazing designs in context with African textile history, the Lancashire cotton trade and modern exports. Richly illustrated with over 40 mounted textile samples dating to the 1880's from the patent office collections of the National Archives.

Also many African textiles from the Horniman Museum, London and Dorman Museum collections as well as modern examples from A. Brunnschweiler & Co., textile manufacturers. Definitely one not to be missed! Workshops for curriculum studies from KS1 -3, this exhibition is a must for anyone studying African design.

The museum welcomes any expression of interest about these exhibitions from other venues and individuals. Please email dormanmuseum@middlesbrough.gov.uk.

The museum seeks to provide a changing exhibition programme that reflects and expands on its collections and gallery themes. There are a number of exhibition spaces throughout the museum:

• Temporary exhibition gallery comprises about 120 square metres of open display space dividable by movable walls. This space will be used primarily for larger exhibitions hired or produced in-house.
  
• Open gallery provides about 30 linear metres of double height hanging space for wall hung displays. To be used primarily for small wall hung exhibitions or for displaying project work.
• Circulation space provides about 28 linear metres of double height hanging space or 15 square metres of floor space for cased displays. Currently being used for rotating displays based on the museum collections, private collections, local society displays etc.
